We continue to evolve and finesse these wines with each vintage, as we strive to best express the fruit from our Eden Valley vineyards. Our aim is to challenge traditional thinking and showcase the potential of the Eden Valley area to produce wines of distinction.
The Estate Merlot is from four separate blocks on one of our single estate vineyards in Eden Valley. Grapes are handpicked, basket pressed, and cool fermented, before being matured in tightly-grained French oak. We think the result is pure elegance.
Partnering The Estate Merlot 2018 is The Estate Chardonnay 2018. This is the second vintage release for this wine, and it is a beautifully restrained and elegant style of Chardonnay that highlights the delicacy of Eden Valley fruit.
The vinification process for this varietal has been a departure from tradition in that we encourage a more natural fermentation process to take place, with minimal contact. We want the fruit to shine, along with gentle guidance from a winemaking standpoint.
Gentle additions are introduced in the form of malolactic fermentation and stirring on lees, creating texture and breadth. And 10 months in fine-grained French oak has been instrumental in building delicate layers of complexity.
This wine has been produced using grapes from two separate estate vineyards. One block was planted in 1985, and the other in 1993, so there is excellent age on the vines, leading to a unique and natural complexity. Both vineyards have the L10V1 clone but with different aspects. Grapes were also picked a bit earlier to maintain natural acid and to keep the fresh citrus characters.
